Journalfen

Okay, I'll stay on here for now, however, I have absolutely no intention of paying LJ another cent once my subscription expires at the end of the year. Instead, I now have a journalfen account where I will do my main posts for both fandom and non-fandom friends as well as family.

If any of you are on journalfen, please friend me over there, and if you want an account there, let me know, and I'll ask for one.

ETA: If you'd like a journalfen account, leave a comment with the following information: Requested Journal Name:
Alt Journal Name:
Email:
Age: (For 18 year olds: please include your birthday *DD/MM/YY*)

or simply go here to request one.

The achievement of the day is that I added the Petulant Podcast feed to journalfen's syn page. You can find it here if you listen to the podcast and rather read from your friends' page than checking the site itself. Yup, makes me feel seriously accomplished. Now I'm going to try and figure out how to create a feed for the Petulant Poetess. That will be a serious accomplishment.

Oh, and the latest episode of the podcast is now online. Go, listen, and comment. Let us know what you like, what you don't like, what we can do to improve, and whatever else you feel like telling us.

Is journalfen where most people are going? I'm so confused. LOL Too many journal sites to keep up with. :)

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
It is very confusing at the moment, I absolutely agree! I think there'll be this transition period where everyone tries all and sundry as far as journals are concerned. The thing is, greatestjournal has already (in the past) deleted accounts, similarly to the way LJ has been doing. InsaneJournal is not liked, not only because of its name but also because it offers very little in terms of prettifying. journalfen was created by fans I think, so there would be no issues with the extreme right coming in and threatening etc. and that's what appeals to my lack of political correctness *smirk*. I guess we'll find out over the next months which journal will be the most popular; and then there is always the RSS feed, so we can read each other's posts on our f-lists in any case, no matter where we are.

[identity profile] sshg316.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! I never thought of the RSS feed. Good idea there. I think I may wait a bit and see where it seems everyone goes. My LJ account is paid up til January, so until then, I'm here, I suppose. That is unless there is a mass exodus at some point.

[identity profile] siriusneeds.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I am making journals all over the place. I have one at GJ and IJ. I need a code to get a JF though.

I'm with you, I will not be renewing at the end of the year. My subscription is up mid December. I don't really trust GJ and IJ is not very pretty but they seem to be trying to improve. How does JF look?

ooh and I must say Icon Love!

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I just edited my post to reflect that I can request journals for people. :-)
I'm with you on GJ and IJ - it is why I've joined JF. I'm a paid member there now since I won't be renewing LJ, and I'm much relieved that my few bucks actually do something good to the fandom rather than some corporate tyrant.

I like your icon, too! LOL

[identity profile] siriusneeds.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank you.

okay, have requested it. You'll get an email from them directly. :-)

So, we can ask you to request one (or ask a complete stranger)? Well, we might as well cover our bases. BTW, what is RSS?

If you don't mind...

Yes, I am old and I hope I can get my first requested name as I am not clever to try to come up with another (hence, the shortened 'chat' name).

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I requested your account and you will hear from them directly with a link to verify your email addy. :-)

RSS stands for "really simple syndication" and is basically a coded page on a website that will automatically send out updates to wherever you choose to subscribe to the RSS feed, ie. LJ, JF, yahoo, google, etc. It saves you checking those websites individually.

Umh, if you're old, I'm ancient, LMAO.

[identity profile] closetravenclaw.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! I'm there now. Thank you so much for requesting for us. :D I have friended you over there.

I'm not really old, just feeling that way. ;) LOL.

Bzzzzzzzz...

where is everyone going? I wouldn't know where to start. There's so many places!

Here's mah info:

At the moment, people are going all over the place in case LJ gets even more wonky/wanky (if that's possible).

I requested your account and you'll hear from them directly with a request to verify your email addy. :-)

Yay! I friended you back. :-)

[identity profile] kimberly-elf.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to continue to support LJ, either. I'm not sure what I'll do. I just know that I desperately want to remain in touch with all of my fandom friends. Everyone is going in all sorts of directions. I suppose I'll need accounts all over, too?

BOO LJ!! DAMN YOU, LJ!!

=(

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I like your icon! :-)

With RSS becoming more and more popular, I think it'll be fairly easy to keep in touch with each other, no matter where we'll end up blogging. I personally like journalfen better than the others for the simple reason that they don't mess with users. There are rumours that GF has done a similar deed as LJ with one fan, and IJ just doesn't much appeal to my personal tastes. Damn LJ indeed!

[identity profile] ellaselenelupin.livejournal.com 2007-08-17 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Now that internet/phone are finally fixed I created accounts at GJ and IJ with the same name.
But just to be complete:

Ah, here it is! I see why I missed it: it's from while I was away last weekend and never caught up. Yes, I would like to try Journalfen as well. I like IJ, but clearly a lot of people are bothered by it and seem to be leaning towards JF.

Go, listen, and comment. Let us know what you like, what you don't like, what we can do to improve, and whatever else you feel like telling us.

I only gave a quick comment because I was pressed for time and afraid that if I didn't say something right away I'd forget to come back and say anything at all. (Again.) And I talked about it a little on YIM with [livejournal.com profile] ubiquirk, though not in a whole lot of detail. So here's some slightly more detailed feedback, which I'll x-post to the feedback form on the Podcast page if you like.

I really liked the story discussion on "Swing Time," not least because it pointed me to a great story I might otherwise not have found. I'm not much for HG/DM, but if you lot thought it was worth discussing, I was willing to give it a read, and I'm glad I did.

Similarly, I enjoy the art reviews because they point me to things I otherwise might not find and your reviews give me a clue what I'll find when I get there, which is always nice. Unfortunately, a couple of the links have either expired or just don't work. The link to "Ausmac's Art Piece" directs me back to the Podcast page, and Sharpfish's link turns up a 404 Page Not Found error. But the others were lovely (or funny, as in the case of the "Mean Art").

::squints:: There is just no way to punctuate that last bit that looks right. Anyway, onward.

The commercials are always amusing, though I don't recall the specifics of them just now.

The discussion of "Funky Smut Scenes" was good, and something I'd like to hear more of. What doesn't work is all well and good, but it can be very challenging to figure out what *does* work. Or rather, when things that don't work in one context will work in another. Sometimes it's down to what vocabulary the POV character is most likely to use, sometimes it's more to do with the tone you're trying to set for the scene, and sometimes neither of those things really seems to clearly indicate the best approach. So I hope it's a segment that SW69 will continue to expand upon.

The Writing Corner is similarly helpful. I do try to give thought to which character gets POV for any given chapter or scene, but don't tend to vary from 3rd person limited omniscient, and it was good to be reminded of the reasons to consider the other options that exist.

And Snape's Overture, as I've already told you, was great. And now I'm trying to find the Podcast file so I can replay it and say something more coherent, but I don't know what I saved it under, and it's not showing up in my Windows Media library. ::headdesk::

On the downside, there seemed to be more sound problems than in the previous two eps. At a few points, there was a metallic noise that sounded like someone trying to work a cigarette lighter right next to a microphone, and in the DH discussion at the end there were points where I could tell someone must be speaking but couldn't hear them and other points when several people's voices were speaking at once and I couldn't follow what was being said.

Also, though at this late stage of the game I don't think it's a big deal, the Fandom Gripes section had a major spoiler in it, despite assurances all spoilers would be kept out until the specific DH discussion at the end. It was obviously unintentional, as it was when SW69 was talking about the kerfuffle on WIKTT and she quoted the spoilery subject line in question. The book's been out for nearly a month, so, again, I don't think it's a big deal, but someone might.

Despite these few drawbacks, though, I thought it was a very enjoyable listen overall and I'm already looking forward to the next one.

I've requested a JF account for you, and you will get an email from them directly. :-)

Thank you thank you thank you thank you *bows*. I wish everyone left such detailed reviews!

The Ausmac link is fixed now, thanks for pointing those out. I'll need to check the link on the other computer for the sharpfish one.

Yes, there were sound problems. SB's microphone gave up, and she had to record with her camera, that's what is the main cause of the poor sound in places.

And ::headdesk:: re the spoiler left in there. I only spent an hour or so cleaning up the file, taking the spoilers out, and ended up using the wrong file *snerk*. Ah well. Thanks again for your comprehensive review! It is tremendously helpful if people let us know what they like or dislike, cuz otherwise we'll never know. :-)

Thanks! I've started setting it up this morning.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you *bows*. I wish everyone left such detailed reviews!

You're welcome. I wish I managed to do so more frequently.

There's probably always going to be some kind of tech issue, especially considering how many people you have participating from all over the place. And how sad is it that it took me a minute to figure out what you meant by SB using her camera? For a second, I was picturing her talking into the viewfinder of a regular (if at least digital) camera, and wondering whether the sound would dl into the puter through the same port as the pics do. I'm going to use the excuse that it was very late when I first read this and I was obviously out of it, which is why I waited until morning to reply. *g*

And ::headdesk:: re the spoiler left in there. I only spent an hour or so cleaning up the file, taking the spoilers out, and ended up using the wrong file *snerk*.

There's always something! But seriously, the book's been out long enough that anyone still trying to stay unspoiled should be just plain avoiding anything HP-related.

Thanks again for your comprehensive review! It is tremendously helpful if people let us know what they like or dislike, cuz otherwise we'll never know. :-)

You're welcome. :-)

Sorry about the spoiler. We'd added a warning in after we'd realized it, but it was taken out on accident. :) And the sound, unfortunately, couldn't be helped. We're going to take better measures next time (re-do those parts that are bad). SB's mic had gone out on us at one point. Dang it! Teehee

I'll do something with smut scenes again. I try to change up what I talk about, but perhaps I can make it into something more permanent. Thanks for the comments. We appreciate it.

Sorry about the spoiler. We'd added a warning in after we'd realized it, but it was taken out on accident. :)

::shrugs:: Stuff happens. And as I said above, anybody who's still trying to stay unspoiled at this point needs to be avoiding anything HP-related online. It's been long enough that even people meaning to be careful can slip.

SB's mic had gone out on us at one point. Dang it!

Tech probs must be, erm, fun (yeah, that's the word) when you're trying to coordinate audio from something like a half dozen different people, all in different locations.

I'll do something with smut scenes again. I try to change up what I talk about, but perhaps I can make it into something more permanent.

That'd be neat. I realize that at some point it'd probably get repetitive, but it's such an issue in fanwriting that I think it'd be a neat regular or semi-regular thing to discuss.

Thanks for the comments. We appreciate it.

You're welcome. :-)
