Curious

So, there seems to be a new trend in the newbies' writing styles... Don't ask!

I figured I'd ask here what gets you or puts you off a fic...

[Poll #1307086]

Can't have a poll without a ticky box. LOL

My biggest gripes are thoughtless and sloppy writing. I'm sure you come across that in the queue as well. If an author submits chapter 10 of their tale and still misspells Potions master and still commits homonimicide, even though they had that weakness pointed out to them in the previous nine chapters, I start climbing walls...

*waves back* Gonna miss [livejournal.com profile] melenka? :p

At this point, the writing has to be smooth and clear and there has to be some style to it (or some other Nifty Thing in the first couple of chapters) or my mind skitters away to something (else) shiny.

I can't identify what that Nifty Thing might be - more often than not lately it's tone or narrative voice.

*thinks.

An author has to be "deft" in some way to get me to keep reading these days. That "some way" varies, but "deft" is exactly the word I mean.

As for missing melenka - lol - of course. Have great fun with her! I haven't seen a lot of her lately, but the prairie is emptier without her here... :)

Deft sounds a perfect and beautiful word for a fic! Thanks for that.

The prairie. Am jealous. Here it's just Memphis. Either hot, too hot, very warm or plain cold. And plain cold nowhere near enough times...
