Of Dinners and Aerogardens

I think our guests liked the food. There is about a spoonful of sauerkraut left and two pieces of cake.

Something to nibble on while waiting for the water to boil for the Semmelknoedel (dumblings made with bread, egg, parsley). Oh, yes, those are cars on the table. We had a mini-gourmet present, and he thought it a good idea to decorate the table.

This is the bowl in the middle in the above pic: feta cheese, straight out of the brine, served with a sprinkling of rosemary and virgin olive oil. It lasted about, oh, I dunno, 40 seconds or thereabouts. :P

From left to right: invisible sauerkraut, stuffed mushrooms, Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes), and cheese souffle.

Semmelknoedel

Rahmkuchen (sour cream cake)

And because [livejournal.com profile] stefdarlin wanted to know:

The Aerogarden just before XMyth...

... and tonight. The right tomato plant has two green tomatoes, each about the size of a baby's finger nail and several more flowers. The one on the left doesn't show any yet, but it's been growing at a slightly slower pace. The pepper in the front (middle) isn't showing any flowers yet either, but they're all developing quite enthusiastically. :) The light arm is at its highest now, and I have to prune branches about twice a week.

Damn. I forgot to take a pic of the Sauerbraten, the beef that's been lying in a marinade of vinegar, water, carrots, celeriac, and several spices (mustard seed, cloves, bay leaves, salt, pepper).

Okay, my guys obligingly emptied the dishwasher, so I guess I've run out of excuses that justify procrastination... :)

Now I'm hungry. Thanks sweetie. LOL!

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oops. LOL

[identity profile] voxangelus.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yummy!

Aerogardens have gone on 50% off clearance at a couple local stores, I am eyeing them...

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
We loves them. Like you couldn't tell, LOL. 50% off would definitely be worth it. You could probably recover that within the first year.

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
*wimpers* I really must learn to cook. That looks really really good (especially the feta)!

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. I have no idea what the regulations are for sending cheese to Canada. If you know or find out, let me know and I'll be happy to send you some!

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG Really? Or are you just pulling my leg?

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would I pull your leg???

I'm absolutely serious about it. So, find out if it's acceptable to send a glass jar filled with olive oil, feta cheese, and herbs across the border, then email me your address. :)

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That is very sweet of you! Considering how fast you said the cheese went, and that fact that you said from your previous journal entry on how long it takes to make it. XD

I will have to find out if liquid (oil) can be mailed. Somehow I have a feeling that it won't be considering this day and age. :( *crosses fingers*

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
:) There doesn't appear to be a restriction on food stuffs from what I found: http://canadaonline.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&sdn=canadaonline&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca%2Fimport%2Fpostal-postale%2Fmenu-eng.html
But there isn't much on google.

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
*sulks* I called Canada post today and they said that they had issues with sending dairy into Canada. :(

But thank you for the offer. I really do appreciate that gesture, it was very sweet of you.

[identity profile] kizzy7.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, now I'm hungry. Everything looks absolutely delicious!

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, thanks. I love feeding friends, especially the ones who enjoy eating. My entire family consists of grazers...

[identity profile] abitofadork7.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
God, everything so absolutely amazing. Wish I had some.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I think everyone enjoyed it. That or they hadn't eaten for two days... LOL

[identity profile] m-mcgonagall-65.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yummm! Time for lunch now!

You rock, my dear! Thanks for all the lovely photos and the lesson in German, lol.

I am really glad you posted some pics of the Aerogarden, now I definitely want one. *Pine* Do you think if I give hubby my big doe eyes and batting eyelashes, he might cave? (Probably not, heh.)

I spoke to my stepmom about some heirloom tomatoes, and she said she would send me some seeds for some Indian purples. She assures me they are tasty. So, I suppose when she does, I shall have to plant them (and pray I don't kill them) and enter into adventures in gardening.

The food looks so yummy and the plants, divine. ;o) Thank you.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
You are very welcome!

Yes, big doe eyes might work. *grins*

Heirloom tomatoes, yummy! And purple ones to boot!

Growing tomatoes outdoors was a futile exercise last year. They did brilliantly until early July. All had flowers, but then it got really hot (around 100F) and with hardly any shade, all the plants died within the course of a week. Out of six tomato plants (grown from seed) I ended up with a harvest of about two; all the rest died from the sun and heat :(

I'm excited atm: the second tomato plant has started to show flowers, and the two green tomatoes on the right one have grown. So I can probably start harvesting within the next ten days or so. The harvesting season is at least a month, probably longer, and I'm already pondering what to seed next. I'm thinking of salad greens because herbs I can easily do on the balcony...

I've always really liked the idea of the Aerogarden, but I just can't quite wrap my head around paying hundreds of dollars for something that is essentially a plant pot with a desk light (with a plant light bulb inside) attached to the top of it. Is there more to this than I realize? Something that justifies the high cost of such a low tech item?? I'd reall like to know more about it.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Vox was saying that she's seen them half price locally, and she lives in your corner of the country, I think.

I don't know how much exactly they are, but I think around $150 to purchase. I bought a seed kit that came with the feeding tablets, not so much out of laziness, but because I'm new to hydroponics, so I figured I'll be learning as I grow the seeds. The kit was $15 and included two tomato and one jalapeno and sufficient feeding tablets for about six months I think. It's been around ten weeks since I planted the seeds, and I expect to have tomatoes within the next couple of weeks. I'll be relishing those at a time when local produce is very sparse. :)

I love the experience of having it. I find the light it gives very pleasant, being able to literally watch the plants grow is incredible, and the sound of the water trickling down the roots is soothing. And then the produce when it's ready, being able to harvest fresh tomatoes in the middle of winter... *yummy*

Feta

Other than in a salad(pasta and green), how else does one eat it? With crackers?
