In a way, I'm relieved Dorkboy is traveling this week. Having to spend an hour at Starbucks every day while Little Man is at MA class does seem to do Lucius good. He likes being written by hand *snickers*. And I get to listen to music without anyone making comments, which is, once again, a novelty. And then we get home, and the coffee shows its effect, making me all bouncy.
Of course, Dorkboy's trip to California is making me rethink Memphis. We settled here thinking it's relatively near to newly-found family. The fact is, we haven't seen most of them at all, and my brother maybe two or three times a year. So I started wondering some time ago what the point is of living in a place so utterly deprived of culture and intelligence. I really despise this... excuse of a so-called city. It's unbearably hot for about seven months of the year, the weather is freakish, most of its inhabitants are so totally not to mylikingunderstanding, so why on earth am I here??? I understand it from a spiritual point of view, totally so, but, gods, can I please have a reprieve and live somewhere where maybe one or two people actually share my beliefs and maybe some culture thrown in, too?

As for destination, we're considering California. I'll just have to see how my head copes with earthquakes there and then decide.

I do understand how sometimes the lower cost of living might not be worth what else is lost. I consider myself very lucky to have lived in the DC area - which is pretty cultured and educated.

Get out when you caan!
Everything about this city is stiffling from the weather to the culture to the raceism against white people.
When the economy improves and we have a chance of selling our house, we're moing probably to Knoxville.

I like it here. I know, my friends are asking me, why don't I move back to San Diego. But I like it here, and there is enough culture to keep me satisfied. :)

I'll need to think this through carefully. I hate moving, really, and the next time I'll do it, it'll have to be to a place that has everything I need, ie. not-too-hot weather, real culture, not a hopelessly under-educated population, and places to hike and hunt mushrooms nearby. Not much, lol.

Perhaps it's time for a change for you. My relatives live in either Detroit or Salt Lake. You couldn't pay me to move to Detroit! And as for Salt Lake, I like it all right, but it's not my favorite. I'm staying here for a while. Maybe someday in the future.
I see some of them more often now than if I lived in town, I think, too. It's funny how you take for granted the closeness of your relatives and just... don't see them.
I find Denver to be quite nice. Perhaps a move to the Rockys?

It's funny how this kind of realisation comes about. We had a dinner guest on Saturday. We know him because he's one of the MA instructors where Little Man trains, but he also is an illustrator. He is educated. I was able to have a normal conversation with him and then realised that I'd not had this with any local since we've moved here. It really made me think, and then I realised that I like going to Starbucks because the staff there don't just stare at me blankly when I order. In most places around here, if you don't have this Southern drawl, they think you speak a foreign language. Yes, definitely time to get out, LOL!

Oh, and come to California- we have a dysfunctional state government, but at least we have organic arugula! :D

AND you don't have to worry about catching on fire the way we do downstate. We also have some really amazing cheesemakers in this state (Cowgirl Creamery, Point Reyes, Cypress Grove)... :D

And there is not place where the weather is just right all the time.

You're absolutely right, of course. But many places have at least more moderate weather. It's only June and I'm already sick and tired of the heat and the humidity. You step outside and get instantly covered in sweat, yearning for a cool shower. It's really unpleasant. And what's worse, it's going to continue until at least late October. *makes instant plans for holidays in cooler climates*

Houses are uber, uber, uber, uber CHEAP up here as well.
14% unemployment sucks, though.

Careful, woman, you're talking about the town I was born in!
And left when I was TWO. And have been back to occasionally to visit the relatives remaining there. And still don't get.
So feel free to join me out here in sunny Southern California, where beliefs and culture of all kinds (and I mean ALL kinds!) are not only welcome but downright required!
But at least Lucius is getting a hand job out of it....

California is definitely an option, although the Bay Area is more likely than SoCa. I do like various beliefs and cultures rather than just one, as is the case here in Memphis... Makes for a boring life...
*gigglesnrts at your Lucius comment*

Yes, earthquakes are an issue. I'll have to see how I'll cope in SF during Azkatraz. I'm pathetic; I get headaches before earthquakes. I've tracked every single one above 1.6 on the New Madrid Fault since we moved to Memphis and that's a hundred miles away... But we lived in CA and loved it, and I had no headaches, so... we'll see.
