In a way, I'm relieved Dorkboy is traveling this week. Having to spend an hour at Starbucks every day while Little Man is at MA class does seem to do Lucius good. He likes being written by hand *snickers*. And I get to listen to music without anyone making comments, which is, once again, a novelty. And then we get home, and the coffee shows its effect, making me all bouncy.

Of course, Dorkboy's trip to California is making me rethink Memphis. We settled here thinking it's relatively near to newly-found family. The fact is, we haven't seen most of them at all, and my brother maybe two or three times a year. So I started wondering some time ago what the point is of living in a place so utterly deprived of culture and intelligence. I really despise this... excuse of a so-called city. It's unbearably hot for about seven months of the year, the weather is freakish, most of its inhabitants are so totally not to my likingunderstanding, so why on earth am I here??? I understand it from a spiritual point of view, totally so, but, gods, can I please have a reprieve and live somewhere where maybe one or two people actually share my beliefs and maybe some culture thrown in, too?

You? Bouncy? LOL!

Annie says we're visiting en route. Looking forward to seeing you!

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I do occasionally get bouncy, LOL.

Woohoo, yay, that's awesome!!! *iz getting excited and more bouncy*

[identity profile] shalimar1981.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Memphis was nice to visit, but if you don't like it there... you don't have a problem with moving (unlike me, with my fifty+ boxes and furniture) so do it. Where would you want to move if you could? *hugs and excited to see you in less than a month!*

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be tiresome, a move, but if it gets us where I want to be, I'd put up with it.

As for destination, we're considering California. I'll just have to see how my head copes with earthquakes there and then decide.

[identity profile] ltgarrix.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Congrats on the writing. And sorry to hear about Memphis. J is working really hard to avoid it. The Navy moved their detailers there (supposedly to get closer to the west coast and not show as much preference to the east coast guys by DC being 4 hours to Norfolk). We think it was to get away from folks so that it would be too difficult for someone to just 'show up' to see you.

I do understand how sometimes the lower cost of living might not be worth what else is lost. I consider myself very lucky to have lived in the DC area - which is pretty cultured and educated.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
See, we've found out that the lower cost of living isn't all that low. Every place we've been to, be it PA, Chicago, Bay Area, New Orleans... things aren't as expensive as in Memphis. What good is it if you save maybe 300 a month on the apartment cost only to spend an extra 500 on various other things? Culture here is non-existent; they hold freaking blues sessions at the opera house, presumably because nobody watches the operas they put on. *sigh* I think it's really time to get out of here, LOL.

I think a move might be just the thing for you, any preferred areas?

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
California (Bay Area) would definitely be an option. The only thing that's stopping me right now is earthquakes. Apartments are more expensive, but the actual cost of day-to-day living is lower than here, and the public transport system is awesome, and, oh, yeah, culture...

That's where we will likely end up, in a few years when the economy settles and I can find a good position out there. It's gorgeous in that area.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Such good taste, Mr Malfoy! We lived there for six months when we first moved to the US, and we all loved it. Yes, very different from the UK, but all delightfully so.

[identity profile] alabastard.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have my eye on that area, and you'll be there, which certainly doesn't hurt.

[identity profile] southernwitch69.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well... you know I always say, "Go to New Orleans," but you don't like the heat. :(

~wants you near her~

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The heat is no better than here, so really, it's not an option, as much as I loved New Orleans. :(

[identity profile] calypsobard.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
FLEEEEE!!!
Get out when you caan!
Everything about this city is stiffling from the weather to the culture to the raceism against white people.
When the economy improves and we have a chance of selling our house, we're moing probably to Knoxville.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It never occurred to me to see it as racism against white people, but now that you mention it, gods, that's so damn true!

[identity profile] grrangerous.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Move to New York! It's awesome. Except that it's raining today, and of course it's hideously expensive, but other than that it's perfect.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I like rain. Rain means mushrooms will grow in the forests, and I'll be a happy witch. And the cultural life is awesome in NY, of course. But, yeah, expensive... *sighs*

[identity profile] organic-chemist.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have two words for you: Chapel Hill. :)

I like it here. I know, my friends are asking me, why don't I move back to San Diego. But I like it here, and there is enough culture to keep me satisfied. :)

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Too hot there, though. :(

I'll need to think this through carefully. I hate moving, really, and the next time I'll do it, it'll have to be to a place that has everything I need, ie. not-too-hot weather, real culture, not a hopelessly under-educated population, and places to hike and hunt mushrooms nearby. Not much, lol.

[identity profile] gardengirl6.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No commentary on the text, but that icon... it's FABULOUS!!!! Puts "tacet" in a whole new context, LOL.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I'm rather fond of it, too. xD

[identity profile] debjunk.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Having lived in Atlanta and struggled through the heat there, and now living in anti-cultural Cheyenne, I hear ya.

Perhaps it's time for a change for you. My relatives live in either Detroit or Salt Lake. You couldn't pay me to move to Detroit! And as for Salt Lake, I like it all right, but it's not my favorite. I'm staying here for a while. Maybe someday in the future.

I see some of them more often now than if I lived in town, I think, too. It's funny how you take for granted the closeness of your relatives and just... don't see them.

I find Denver to be quite nice. Perhaps a move to the Rockys?

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*smiles*

It's funny how this kind of realisation comes about. We had a dinner guest on Saturday. We know him because he's one of the MA instructors where Little Man trains, but he also is an illustrator. He is educated. I was able to have a normal conversation with him and then realised that I'd not had this with any local since we've moved here. It really made me think, and then I realised that I like going to Starbucks because the staff there don't just stare at me blankly when I order. In most places around here, if you don't have this Southern drawl, they think you speak a foreign language. Yes, definitely time to get out, LOL!

[identity profile] mundungus42.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on the writing! Your productivity makes me keenly aware that I played Plants vs. Zombies last night instead of writing.

Oh, and come to California- we have a dysfunctional state government, but at least we have organic arugula! :D

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, organic arugula would totally be a reason to move there!!! We're actually thinking of Bay Area. The weather is nice most of the time, San Francisco and thus culture is nearby, and it doesn't take long to drive to beautiful country where hiking is easy and mushrooms grow aplenty. Definitely worth pursuing I think... xD

[identity profile] mundungus42.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The Bay Area is expensive, even more so than in San Diego, and I don't just mean rent. However, it makes up for it, as you point out, by being gorgeous and having a kick-ass arts scene (Mr. 42 and I have gone up to SF just to see operas. Twice!).
AND you don't have to worry about catching on fire the way we do downstate. We also have some really amazing cheesemakers in this state (Cowgirl Creamery, Point Reyes, Cypress Grove)... :D

[identity profile] apisa-b.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know Memphis, except it being mentioned in songs, so I can't possibly cheer you up. Except: *HUGS*

And there is not place where the weather is just right all the time.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
::feels loved::

And there is not place where the weather is just right all the time.

You're absolutely right, of course. But many places have at least more moderate weather. It's only June and I'm already sick and tired of the heat and the humidity. You step outside and get instantly covered in sweat, yearning for a cool shower. It's really unpleasant. And what's worse, it's going to continue until at least late October. *makes instant plans for holidays in cooler climates*

[identity profile] voxangelus.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Summers here are like a freaking sauna because of the big lake. The snow is pretty, though!

Houses are uber, uber, uber, uber CHEAP up here as well.

14% unemployment sucks, though.

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, here we have the Mississippi river that brings the 90% humidity, and that's on good days...

[identity profile] elise-wanderer.livejournal.com 2009-06-18 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)

Careful, woman, you're talking about the town I was born in!

And left when I was TWO. And have been back to occasionally to visit the relatives remaining there. And still don't get.

So feel free to join me out here in sunny Southern California, where beliefs and culture of all kinds (and I mean ALL kinds!) are not only welcome but downright required!

But at least Lucius is getting a hand job out of it....

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

California is definitely an option, although the Bay Area is more likely than SoCa. I do like various beliefs and cultures rather than just one, as is the case here in Memphis... Makes for a boring life...

*gigglesnrts at your Lucius comment*

[identity profile] corianderpie.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Bay Area! Rawr! It is a glorious place to live. And you could join the SF Mycological Society! Earthquakes, though? We do got em. What about Portland? Or other smaller cities in western Oregon: Corvallis, Eugene--even Ashland. The food scene in Portland is outstanding--they are PASSIONATE about their food there, and great cheesemakers too. And, as we have discussed, truffles grow in Oregon. Truffles!

O, come west...

[identity profile] lady-karelia.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
The biggest draw initially was a lack of incurring expenses where hubby's job is concerned. But the more we look at it, the more we find in favour of the Bay Area.

Yes, earthquakes are an issue. I'll have to see how I'll cope in SF during Azkatraz. I'm pathetic; I get headaches before earthquakes. I've tracked every single one above 1.6 on the New Madrid Fault since we moved to Memphis and that's a hundred miles away... But we lived in CA and loved it, and I had no headaches, so... we'll see.
