Feel free to ignore; I'm just thinking aloud here...
Since we spent nearly two years living in non-permanent conditions, which included anywhere from about 10F to 105F, my wardrobe, by necessity, has turned pretty much into a layered one, ie. I can wear the same clothes year around, only in winter I add leg warmers, arm warmers, woolen sweaters, etc. The only difference is shoes. And it hasn't been cold enough lately to wear a hat. But I have one.
The summer in Antarctica, at least where those cruises go, has an average day temperature of 32F or higher from what I've been reading. It's also a surprisingly dry continent, with only occasional snow during the summer months (our winter months). Which means all I'd have to buy is snow-proof boots.
After some more online digging, I've found a few companies that offer cruises for around $5k. The difference in prices seems to be mainly the extent of luxuries offered on the vessel. I don't need internet access during those two weeks, nor do I need to have my own candle-lit bathroom, honestly. I'm happy to share the shower with one other room. Of course, I won't share my room, or else I'd get away with about $3500, but that's not an option really. I do need a corner I can retreat to at any time. So, yeah, the $5k option it'll have to be.
As for flights to Ushuaia, of course, I could fly from Memphis (via Miami or Dallas or Atlanta) to Buenos Aires, and then on to Ushuaia. However, if I book a flight with the Argentinian airline from Miami, I can fly literally anywhere in Argentina. I'll have to change in Buenos Aires, but the inland flight won't cost anything extra! Which brings down the flight cost by about half... Instead of paying $1500 from Memphis to BA, plus whatever the cost from BA to Ushuaia is, I can pick up a cheap flight from here to Miami (or use some of DB's airmiles ;-) ) and then fly directly. So that brings it down to about $700-900, depending on airmiles availability.
So, basically, $6000 sounds a lot better than $15000! Not only that, it sounds way more hopeful, too. Like, $6k I can save if I seriously put my mind to it. I don't have to go this year. I can wait until the end of 2009 and go then. Yup. *nods encouragingly at self*
