Chapter I
His eyes were unmoving, but Hermione noticed his hand crawling feebly towards his robe pocket.
She followed Harry out of the Shrieking Shack, hurrying back to the Great Hall. As she stood next to Ginny, looking disbelievingly at the dead bodies on the floor, the scene they’d just left entered her mind. His death is unnecessary... I need to do something....
Slowly, as to not draw attention, Hermione left the mourning crowd. The moment she reached the door and turned a corner, she started running towards the entrance doors. Looking around carefully for a moment, ensuring nobody was watching her, she cast a Disillusionment Charm on herself, then another one for good measure. Then she checked her robe pocket for essence of dittany before running to the Whomping Willow, down the tunnel and back to the Shrieking Shack.
Snape was still lying on the floor, but his eyes were open, and he looked at Hermione as she entered the room. She knelt down next to him and showed him the phial with essence of dittany. “If you manage to sit up, I can pour it onto the bites, Professor,” she said, slightly out of breath.
Snape tried to move into a sitting position, but only managed with gritted teeth when Hermione pulled him up. She applied the potion and stood up again.
“Be safe, Professor.” That said, she turned and hurried back to the Great Hall.
The entire act must have taken barely ten minutes, Hermione realised as she re-entered the Great Hall and joined the Weasley family, who were huddled around Fred’s body.
“Alright, love?” Ron asked her, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer. She nodded and leaned into him, feeling securely caught in the safety net Ron had lately become to her.
