I can understand your dad. I can well imagine that if I'm home, I'd just wrap up the kids, deposit them in the center of the house and then go out on the patio to watch. The play in the sky that unfolds is incredible, exciting, awesome, and makes me feel very humble.
We lived in the Bay area for six months, and it took me about three months to figure out that my head aches before any earthquake stronger than about 2.5. Since then, we've made a point of staying away from such areas because headaches just aren't pleasant... Otherwise, I would love to live in CA.
