Well, maybe. But isn't it a group with 16,587 members (I cheated, I just looked at the numbers), so it's not really a private group. Anyone can go there (and a bunch of underage people are members of it) so anyone knows about it. I don't understand why there should be a lack of manners, since the WIKTT LJ is a sister group of WIKTT, it's still a part of the main group.
As for IM, I agree. It's private because it's between two or three maybe a bit more people, and you trust them. But seriously, can you trust 16,000 or so people?
