Grateful thanks to you all for your kind words and support! You cannot even begin to imagine how much that means to me. Yeah, crankydragon, it is the Baptist. Not that I knew about their reputation, but adding traveling time with a child not old enough to visit just wasn't an option... At least here, I can go back and forth several times a day.

They had scheduled surgery for this morning, but it didn't actually happen until after 5pm. Took about 45 minutes. Apparently, it was quite a sizable abscess, which they drained and then packed. It seems to be fairly common in the summer months for people with a compromised immune system to develop such abscesses. He was quite miserable tonight after the surgery, but they're giving him morphine to control the pain and assured me that he'll be much better tomorrow. I was very grateful that the nurse on duty tonight was competent, not only with her offerings of explanations without me even asking but also being very sympathetic that I went home because Little Man especially is very upset that his daddy is ill. And his 18-yr-old sister shouldn't be asked to deal with that kind of emotional trauma. The nurse said that he's likely to spend most of the night sleeping, and I'll go back in the morning.

I missed any of your posts talking about this, but, my dear, how frightening for you all. It will be all right even if the recuperation period is painful and seems slow (my cousin had one of these shortly after she had her twins a year ago.) Oddly enough, this is apparently one of the fastest growing 'illnesses' in this country today, according to the ER doctors who treated my cousin.

Having said that, I do hope he feels better soon, and they minimize the spread of the abcess, which probably grew faster than anyone realized it was an issue.

I'll be thinking of you and yours a great deal over the next few days, and wishing there was something more I could do.

I know that must be very painful. I'm so glad that his pain is taken seriously, and he's receiving adequate pain relief. I sincerely hope he passes a good night and feels much better tomorrow.

Sending all kinds of good vibes towards you and the kids, that you may be able to rest in confidence that DB is well cared for.

Golly, that sounds frightening. I hate that combination of fear and frustration one gets dealing with hospitals. Tell him best wishes from around four thousand miles away.

I missed your first post about this! So sorry! I hope he's feeling better today. I know it's rough when you have to provide emotional support for everybody. Hopefully things will be looking up soon.

Glad they finally got it drained. Hopefully if this happens in the future, they won't take so long to treat it. I cannot imagine what an abscess that took 45 minutes to drain and pack must have been like.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and that you don't have to go through this again. Do they think something might have triggered it that could be prevented in the future?
