In a way, I'm relieved Dorkboy is traveling this week. Having to spend an hour at Starbucks every day while Little Man is at MA class does seem to do Lucius good. He likes being written by hand *snickers*. And I get to listen to music without anyone making comments, which is, once again, a novelty. And then we get home, and the coffee shows its effect, making me all bouncy.

Of course, Dorkboy's trip to California is making me rethink Memphis. We settled here thinking it's relatively near to newly-found family. The fact is, we haven't seen most of them at all, and my brother maybe two or three times a year. So I started wondering some time ago what the point is of living in a place so utterly deprived of culture and intelligence. I really despise this... excuse of a so-called city. It's unbearably hot for about seven months of the year, the weather is freakish, most of its inhabitants are so totally not to my likingunderstanding, so why on earth am I here??? I understand it from a spiritual point of view, totally so, but, gods, can I please have a reprieve and live somewhere where maybe one or two people actually share my beliefs and maybe some culture thrown in, too?

Well, Memphis was nice to visit, but if you don't like it there... you don't have a problem with moving (unlike me, with my fifty+ boxes and furniture) so do it. Where would you want to move if you could? *hugs and excited to see you in less than a month!*

Congrats on the writing. And sorry to hear about Memphis. J is working really hard to avoid it. The Navy moved their detailers there (supposedly to get closer to the west coast and not show as much preference to the east coast guys by DC being 4 hours to Norfolk). We think it was to get away from folks so that it would be too difficult for someone to just 'show up' to see you.

I do understand how sometimes the lower cost of living might not be worth what else is lost. I consider myself very lucky to have lived in the DC area - which is pretty cultured and educated.

I think a move might be just the thing for you, any preferred areas?

FLEEEEE!!!
Get out when you caan!
Everything about this city is stiffling from the weather to the culture to the raceism against white people.
When the economy improves and we have a chance of selling our house, we're moing probably to Knoxville.

Move to New York! It's awesome. Except that it's raining today, and of course it's hideously expensive, but other than that it's perfect.

I have two words for you: Chapel Hill. :)

I like it here. I know, my friends are asking me, why don't I move back to San Diego. But I like it here, and there is enough culture to keep me satisfied. :)

Having lived in Atlanta and struggled through the heat there, and now living in anti-cultural Cheyenne, I hear ya.

Perhaps it's time for a change for you. My relatives live in either Detroit or Salt Lake. You couldn't pay me to move to Detroit! And as for Salt Lake, I like it all right, but it's not my favorite. I'm staying here for a while. Maybe someday in the future.

I see some of them more often now than if I lived in town, I think, too. It's funny how you take for granted the closeness of your relatives and just... don't see them.

I find Denver to be quite nice. Perhaps a move to the Rockys?

Congratulations on the writing! Your productivity makes me keenly aware that I played Plants vs. Zombies last night instead of writing.

Oh, and come to California- we have a dysfunctional state government, but at least we have organic arugula! :D

I don't know Memphis, except it being mentioned in songs, so I can't possibly cheer you up. Except: *HUGS*

And there is not place where the weather is just right all the time.

Summers here are like a freaking sauna because of the big lake. The snow is pretty, though!

Houses are uber, uber, uber, uber CHEAP up here as well.

14% unemployment sucks, though.

Careful, woman, you're talking about the town I was born in!

And left when I was TWO. And have been back to occasionally to visit the relatives remaining there. And still don't get.

So feel free to join me out here in sunny Southern California, where beliefs and culture of all kinds (and I mean ALL kinds!) are not only welcome but downright required!

But at least Lucius is getting a hand job out of it....

Bay Area! Rawr! It is a glorious place to live. And you could join the SF Mycological Society! Earthquakes, though? We do got em. What about Portland? Or other smaller cities in western Oregon: Corvallis, Eugene--even Ashland. The food scene in Portland is outstanding--they are PASSIONATE about their food there, and great cheesemakers too. And, as we have discussed, truffles grow in Oregon. Truffles!

O, come west...
