It's Little One's Birthday today, he is 7 years old! Yet it seems like yesterday that we were queuing at Safeway's in Pleasanton and labor started, and 3 hours later he entered this world.
The day started nice enough with the alarm clock going off at 8am, since hubby volunteered to make Samosas and Pakoras for the birthday party and they taste fresh so much better than a day old... I didn't mind at all, as I got puris and an omelette for breakfast out of it. Puris are a kind of flat bread, similar to Naan or Chapati, but deep-fried.
The day positively improved when the postman delivered a parcel that took about 8 weeks from the Southern States to Olde England. But the timing was truly beautiful, Little One (I can't really call him that for much longer, he's growing so fast, if he continues he'll reach my height in a year or two!) was entirely over the moon with his new color pencils and a sketch book and started drawing a witch straight away, all black of course, since his mum mainly wears black. His mood got even better when he discovered the Fruit by the Foot in the package and I entered seventh heaven upon seeing the packs of cornbread and corn muffin mixes. Let's just say that my diet over the next week or so will entirely consist of jalapeno and sweetcorn corn muffins, cornbread and monterey jack and jalapeno muffins.
All courtesy of Aunt Margie. Again. This is the second time in a week that she's made our day. First the phone call, now the wonderful care package. Sara had Power Bars for breakfast, LOL, the first time for a year and a half, when a home-school friend from the US brought us some back from there. Needless to say, she was one happy bunny, too!
Aunt M. was saying on the phone that she hopes to be able to visit soon and I shall do everything in my power to make it happen. If anyone reading this does energy work, please direct some towards our goal. We'll visit Stonehenge, Chesil Beach, the New Forest of course, and if the visit is over the Summer Solstice, we'll watch the sunrise at Knowlton, an ancient site, where the sun rises right between the two yew trees on the summer solstice.
Anyways, back to today! We got to the local village hall at around 1.30, too late to make it warm enough inside before the party started, but nobody seemed to mind, since we meet there weekly anyways and everyone is used to crowding around the radiators or the kitchen. The pakoras were a big hit with Bribbet and Hatty, and hubby eventually had to move the pakoras to the table outside, fearing for their waistlines (Hatty's comment, not mine!). The birthday party was an open invitation to every local homeschooler of those who meet weekly, and I was very pleased to see one family in particular. :-) Calixa's mum is down with an ear infection so didn't come, and I still haven't met Calixa in person. I really must make an effort to visit her before the end of the year - not much time left now, especially as our social life seems to take off like never before *shudder*. 3 months ago I used to say 'socialize? me? get real! It's not in my nature to socialize'. Then Bribbet comes along and drags me out of my lair and I'm on my way to becoming a social butterfly *more_shudders*.
Sara not only did most of the food, and from scratch, too (2 chocolate cakes, including decorating the b-day cake with icing, pizza, garlic bread, a most beautiful grilled leek with hazelnut salad, a banana/coffee dessert, fruit salad), she also acted as DJ with Little One's preferred songs which she recorded last night onto the computer, so she could provide the music today! She's turning into one amazing young lady. Not that she wasn't amazing as a small child, but her little brother's party success is thanks in very large part to her! And she's not even 15 yet!
The kids had a whale of a time, and I know for sure the parents enjoyed the food, so what more can we ask for?
All in all, it's been a wonderful day and now Not-so-Little-One and I are alone at home as hubby and Sara have gone to the cinema to see Blade. He's happy playing StarWars Battlefront, and I'm chilling out in front of the computer.
Tomorrow Bribbet and family will come over for dinner and New Years' Eve we'll be going to Hatty's, after she and her family spent the last two New Year Eves with us. So much socializing in one week, if this is any indication for the new year to come I won't shy away from social gatherings any longer, LOL.
Will try and update before the end of the year.
