I'm interested in finding out the average number of review per reads, could you humour me, please? Look at the number of reads you get, and the number of reviews for any given chapter. Divide the number of reads by the number of reviews. Thanks bunches.

Interesting idea, but with the recent move of SH the amount of hits is much smaller than it used to be.

Are you interested in certain archives and in SS/HG only?

Recent SH is maybe not the best example. I know both reads and reviews have gone down considerably over the last few months, but it looks like readers have moved to other archives and read there instead. All in all, the number of actual reads hasn't gone down, at least I don't think so.

Any archives, really, and it doesn't have to be SS/HG only. I just want to get a general idea of what the average is, mainly to give an educated example range in an article about reviewing.

For what it's worth.

For my four-chaptered SS/HG story the average is about 110 at OWL and 50 at TPP.

The average for my two Snape one-shots is between 70 and 100.

The average for my SS/MM one-shot is 55 at SH (posted after the move) and 20 at TPP.

Thank you, that does help! Wow, 20 is amazing! My good ones average at around 50.

Yes, I was astonished by the 20 as well when I just realised it, but as you can see, normally the average is much lower. It's even down to 110. I suppose that means that I will have to keep writing to become more famous. ;)

Actually, my own average on SH lately is even worse than 110, lol. But yes, I agree, more writings do equal more fame and likely more reviews...

There are a lot of variable to this response: archive, length of story, whether it's a WIP or completed work, and type of story (erotica or drama or angst.)

In general, my earlier stories garnered 1-2 reviews per 100 reads. As I became better known, the review:hit ratio increased, but it's still not more than 10 reviews per 100 reads, except for my more erotic bits. But they're still around 15 reviews per 100 reads.

I'm not a wildly popular author like SnarkyRoxy or RachelW or example, so I might not be a good choice for the survey.

You are an excellent choice. Basically, I need a good idea as to the range for an article on reviewing. I'd like to encourage readers to leave reviews, and in order to do that, I want to be able to give an educated average number, something along the lines of, "An author will receive between one and fifty reviews per five-hundred reads..." So, your reply was very helpful, thank you!

You're most welcome.

I'm procrastinating ... can you tell? I think I'm just so pressured my mind is rebelling by going into stall mode.

I'm so glad you had this question! ::grins::

*gasp* You procrastinating??? That's amazing because for once, I'm not, and I'm the queen of procrastination generally. Is it the exchange fic? I read some of the comments last night and thought the one suggesting writing all three endings was excellent! DD used to be into those R L Stine books, in which you could choose how to continue every few pages to arrive at different endings. They provided never-ending entertainment. *laughs*

::snicker:: Yeah, me. I've been writing desultorily, meandering my way into the end of this story. I'm not sure I've got the image clear in my head though ... I'm working on it. I only managed five pages today. ::sigh::

::laughs:: Three endings. I'll be happy to get to one.

Good luck on your non-procrastination day!

Have some *muse_vibes* :-) I hope the writing-day worked out well for you.

The non-procrastination day has been productive. I've been patchworking fabric with musical themes for a skirt. I feel really accomplished now, even though I didn't write.

I agree with the 10% ratio. I have had the same, and even when I was writting in the French fandom, it was the same one.
Must be something universal :D

10%? That does seem a lot, one review for every ten reads. Lucky you!

Maybe because it was the French fandom :) or maybe the fact my stories in English didn't get that many readings. On Ash, it was 10%, i remember thinking there so much more reading, but more review as well!

Yup, I always figure the 2% is a good thing when it happens and I treasure it.

Most places I post don't have the option of viewing the number of hits, so I'll just give you my stats from TPP.

On It All Comes Down To Time, I average a review for every 38 hits. On The Sponge Bath I averaged a review per every 18 hits. The Sins of Sex averaged one review per every 28 hits. Eternal Love averaged a review per every 24 hits. In the Name of Research averaged one review per every 50 hits.

All of those but Time are one shots. Time is at nineteen chapters now. Hope that helps! :)

Thank you, that was helpful! I've had a feeling that one-shots somehow draw more reviews than WIPs. :-)

Oh, yeah. I always average more reviews on one-shots. I think that the majority of people want some quick entertainment, so a one-shot fits the bill nicely. It is hard to get involved in a multichaptered WIP. You never know if it will be finished. Plus, it takes a lot of time to get through a longer story. I'm glad I could help. Let me know how things shape up. :)

How many reads for each review left, can you tell? Teehee, it looks like readers reward the author more if smut is involved, lol.

I have one fic at SH and I think it is at 300 or so reads. I can't remeber for sure and I have 10 reviews. It is an odd fic so I can't say that it surprises me that I have recieved such few reviews, although they are all good.

I have one chaptered fic, the only one I have ever done up at the pit and I think it is at 3200 reads. There I have 30 reviews.

I think people are a bit like me, they read they may enjoy but don't take the time to review. Sometimes I am just a bit afraid if I don't know the writer of who I am sending a comment to. Quirk of mine.

You might use the old letter to the editor yardstick. They used to say that for every letter to the editor turned in at a newspaper, five others wanted to send off one but did not.

I figured this out about a year ago. Curiousity and all.

I was averaging roughly one review for every ten reads on SH. Surprisingly, it was the same for Occlumency stories as it was for Ashwinder (Occ was actually one out of nine and Ash was a bir like one out of 10.4). Now it's one out of forty-three! The reads are there, but people just aren't reviewing. That makes no sense to me, but it's what's happening. Of course, the only story I've posted was part of the SSHG exchange, so perhaps people read it there and didn't realize they'd read it when they clicked on.

I never got that obsessive about reviews on other sites because I usually posted on SH first. But I think I was average one out of 23 at OWL. Mostly though, I concentrated on SH's numbers as they were the best.

Some of the variables to consider are if the story is posted at multiple sites and how it's promoted and who the pairings are. Crackfic and PWP always garner higher numbers of reviews than anything else for me.

Hope this helps.
